Some of you may remember a pair of posts many months ago chronicling the yard art of our next-door neighbor, specifically a family of artificial chickens. Well, those neighbors (and their chickens) have moved out and we have a new couple sharing a wall with us.

I feel that yard art is a distinctly American invention as I have never come across it in any other country. I admit to a rather small sampling size of countries that I’ve visited (South Korea, Canada, France, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Costa Rica), and am open to correction if this phenomenon exists in other countries. Well, we in the civilized part of Florida (meaning the neighborhoods that are deed-restricted) have deemed yard art as unsightly and thus against bylaws.

Imagine my surprise when a little piece of Americana shows up next door. I’m talking about your standard-issue bug zapper. What allows you to enjoy the warm southern nights in the out of doors, the bug zapper. What picks up the slack where Off spray leaves off, the bug zapper. What will get an official notice for removal from the homeowner’s association, the bug zapper. I predict that it will be gone by Friday. Of course I took a picture, much to my wife’s embarassment.

for whatever it is worth…it’s a decent looking yard art…sort of mimimalistic…kind of 🙂

Brilliant observation! It blends in to the background until nightfall, but the blue glow and hum is unmistakable after dark.

Yet, another reason to look forward to you 1/2 plus acre back yard in Nashville! 🙂
you could hang even those lovely owl lanterns out on your patio and not offend anyone….except perhaps yourself 🙂

sorry about the smily faces, I guess I got trigger happy with them.

Acknowledging the problem is the first step…

Not 100 ugly bug zappers will ever be cause for our best friends to leave us. Hey, if you stay, we’ll build a wall and add a tiny garage in back!!!!

    A) I would take the association to task on their definition of art. A bug zapper is art only in the loosest Warholian/John Cage-an sort of way. I expect we will begin seeing them in all the major museums in the near future…and then promptly shut down by both the health administration and the animals rights folks.
    B) Romanians happen to be quite fond of lawn gnomes (the “g” is silent).
